Leading the project of mosaicking a bench for the Kentuck Art Center courtyard is Linda Munoz, who has been a stained glass artist for almost 25 years. Her interest in glass has led her to a love of mosaic art and fused glass. She has taught mosaic art to children and adults for the last five years, including classes at The University of Alabama, the Akron Alabama Boy's and Girl's Club, The Kentuck Art Center, and the Coleman Center for Arts and Culture. Linda currently resides in Cuba, Alabama.

Children can contribute to the mosaic bench during the event and, in the Kentuck for Kids area, make and take home paper mosaic artwork.

A la cARTe offers another opportunity to visit the Kentuck Gallery exhibit of extraordinary woodworking by Bill Hubbard, and to see the Annex Gallery exhibits. The Annex is hosting work by students in the Northport Fine Arts Initiative and an exhibition of work by The Tin Man, Charlie Lucas. Charlie is one of three self-taught artists being featured at the Venice Biennale in Italy this summer.

Battle-Friedman Home Celebrates 175 Years

Though the Battles and the Friedmans lived in their home on Greensboro Avenue during different eras, on Saturday, April 16, members of both families will come together. Represented by community members and dressed in historically appropriate attire they will greet and entertain visitors with their stories of life at the house between 1835 and 1965 as the Tuscaloosa County Preservation Society celebrates the Battle-Friedman Home’s 175^th Birthday.

“We have tried to make this Birthday party for the home appealing to everyone by having two programs. The morning program, from 10am to Noon, which is geared to families, will give visiting children a chance to see and hear what life was like in the past in a fun way,” said Katherine Mauter, Executive Director of the Tuscaloosa County Preservation Society.

The morning program will include visits with the Battles and the Friedmans, refreshments including Birthday cupcakes and cookies, balloons, and tours of the home. There will also be a special gingerbread display of the house.

The party in the evening, from 6:00 pm to 8:00pm, will be slightly more formal with refreshments on the porch, tours of the home, visits with the Battles and the Friedmans, musical entertainment and a very special birthday cake to mark the event. The Society is also very excited to welcome descendants of the Battle and Friedman families.

Paul Houghtaling, Director of the Opera Theatre at the University Of Alabama School Of Music who has sung at both national and international venues will, in the guise of Stephen Foster, entertain with some of Fosters best remembered songs.

“Mr. Houghtaling has sung at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and many other famous locations. I think everyone will enjoy his music and we think everyone will be surprised with the wonderful birthday cake that is being created to add to the festivities,” added Mauter when speaking of the evening program.

Robert Loveman, a recognized 19^th century poet was a guest of the Friedman’s when the homes’ gardens inspired him to write a poem which became the basis for the well known song “April Showers.” Loveman will also be represented at both programs.

On Sunday, April 17, from 2:30 to 4:30 the home will host the Preservation Society Annual Easter Egg Hunt for children with the games, refreshments, the Easter Bunny and prizes for everyone including adults.

Tickets for the family program on the morning of April 16 and for the Easter Egg Hunt on the 17th are both $10 for a family of four. An additional $2 will be charged for each extra child.

Tickets for the evening program are $50.

CREATIVE CAMPUS HOSTS 2nd Annual DRUID CITY ARTS FESTIVAL

The University of Alabama’s Creative Campus is pleased to announce the 2^nd Annual Druid City Arts Festival (DCAF). DCAF is a multi-genre, two day festival celebrating regional original arts with a focus on music on March 25 & 26, 2011. The DCAF Music Crawl will kick off the celebration Friday, March 25 in participating venues across town. Each venue will showcase DCAF musical acts from 6 pm until the close of business. DCAF will culminate on Saturday, March 26 in a FREE, all-day, all-ages festival from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm in Government Plaza in downtown Tuscaloosa. To show support for the local arts community, donations accepted throughout the weekend will benefit the Tuscaloosa Arts Council’s small grants program to fund arts education initiatives.

Now in its second year, Druid City Arts Festival will center around musical performances representing a range of genres including Indie Rock, Hip Hop, Country, Jazz, Bluegrass, Reggae, Funk, and more with a focus on local and regional original music. 2011 DCAF headliner is Matthew Mayfield. Patrons can also enjoy performances by the Black Warrior Storytellers featuring Kim Weitkamp. Other special guests and activities include Charlie Lucas, Seraphina, University of Alabama Resonance Show Choir, Strings In Schools, UA African Drumming Ensemble, RipTide Dancers, and children’s interactive arts activities. The festival will also feature a variety of on-site food vendors including Benny’s Hot Dogs, Moe’s Southwest Grill, Bama Dining, and Event Concessions. DCAF jointly celebrates downtown Tuscaloosa alongside the Tour de Tuscaloosa Criterium Cycle races and invites you to enjoy all of the festivities.

Free festival parking is available in the Intermodal Parking Deck adjacent to Government Plaza on 7^th Street. Additionally, DCAF has chartered a Crimson Ride to run continuous routes throughout the day between University of Alabama campus locations, Government Plaza, and back. There is no charge to ride the Crimson Ride.

Druid City Arts Festival started as a student idea and is fully produced by The University of Alabama’s Creative Campus’ undergraduate student interns. These students have done more than put together an arts festival; they have brought together a strong line-up of local regional musicians, artists, storytellers, created a fun family atmosphere, and turned a bright spotlight towards Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The process has been one of education and balance as the students have learned the ins and outs of large scale arts event planning while juggling their classes. From arranging for dumpsters and tents to working with artists and fundraising the process has been both arduous and rewarding as their project has taken shape.

This free community festival is presented by The University of Alabama’s Creative Campus with grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and UA’s Center for Community Based Partnerships. It is also supported by the City of Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa Tourism & Sports Commission, Harrison Galleries LLC, Lamar, private donors, and multiple University of Alabama entities including the University Union, College of Arts and Sciences, Bama Dining, Honors College Assembly, Office of Advancement, Blount Undergraduate Initiative, New College, and Delta Sigma Theta sorority. Internationally Recognized Alabama Folk Artist to Exhibit Art and Tell Personal Stories

At the Kentuck Museum Artist Charlie Lucas will be joined by Co-author Ben Windham and Photographer Chip Cooper to talk about Tin Man an autobiography released in 2009 by UA Press which presents the life and art of Charlie Lucas through his own stories and also through vivid photographs of his art. This event is sponsored by the Kentuck Museum, the University of Alabama Press, the University of Alabama Center for Economic Development, New College, UA Department of English, UA Department of American Studies, and the UA Honors College Assembly.

Charlie Lucas, also known as “The Tin Man” makes art from a variety of found objects which become incorporated into sculptures and paintings. “The Tin Man” is a self-taught artist and although he has made art since childhood, only since a debilitating accident in 1984 did he turn to art as a career. His work contains rich stories and layers of symbols which reveal wisdom and meaning in a dreamlike fashion and he has been recognized nationally and internationally as a great innovator in American folk art. Charlie has been invited to Venice, Italy, this June to attend the Venice Biennial Festival as part of a contingent from the American Folk Art Museum.

The Arts and Humanities Council of Tuscaloosa County will honor artists and patrons of the arts at the 19^th Druid Arts Awards on April 21, 2011 at the Bama Theatre. A reception honoring the winners and their families will be held in the theatre’s Greensboro Room at 6:00 p.m. with the awards ceremony at 7:00 p.m. The deadline for nominations is March 1, 2011 with a ticket deadline of April 18.

Email nominations must be received electronically or letters postmarked by the deadline on March 1st at 5:00 p.m.    Applications, criteria and a list of prior winners are available on line at www.tuscarts.org/druidarts.html or at the Arts Council office, 600 Greensboro Avenue, in the PARA Building.

Nominations for volunteer, artist, and educator (Tuscaloosa County only) will be accepted in each of the categories of Music, Visual Arts, Dance, Theatre and the newest category, Literature.  Nominations will also be taken for Patron of the Arts, Corporate Sponsor of the Year, Special Awards and Home Grown Artist.  The Home Grown Artist award was established in 2009.  This will be awarded to an individual from Tuscaloosa County who has received recognition in their area of specialty on the regional, national or international level by their professional peer groups.  The nominee must be a native of Tuscaloosa County and have received his/her primary and secondary education in one of the local public or private school systems.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased in person at the Arts Council office or by calling 758-5195.  The deadline for purchasing tickets is April 18, 2011 at 5:00 p.m.

In founding and perpetuating the Druid Arts Awards, the Arts Council realized that the number of talented and dedicated people who were working as volunteers, artists and educators in the arts was very large and growing. The Council also realized that the work of these individuals was not often publicly recognized. It was for this reason that the Druid Arts Awards were established, and it has become a biannual presentation recognizing these special individuals and organizations who have achieved distinction in the arts over a number of years in Tuscaloosa County.

hili Cookoff Offers Food, Fun, and Entertainment

The Exchange Club of Tuscaloosa will host its Fifth Annual Great Tuscaloosa Chili
Cookoff on Saturday, February 12, at the Bryant Conference Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Each year forty or more teams of four members each put their best chili recipes to the test in hopes of garnering the judges’ favor and being named grand champion.

In 2009, the grand champion was Nucor Steel. Last year, First Federal Bank was judged to have had the best chili.

A prize is also given for the people’s choice, awarded to the chili team receiving the most votes from those in attendance.

Other awards are given for best booth decoration, best team costumes, and best showmanship.

Glen Smith, chili cookoff chairman says, “The event draws between 800 and 1000 intrepid chili lovers and is festive and fun, featuring children’s activities, live entertainment (a capella singers and a band or two), t-shirt sales, soda and beer sales, and most importantly, the opportunity to sample forty-plus varieties of chili and vote for your favorite.”

Most of the teams have competed before. “Once they see how much fun it is,” Smith says, “they come back.”

Funds raised support local charities and Exchange Club projects in youth development, child abuse prevention, Americanism, and community service. For example, portions of the last three chili cookoff proceeds were used to construct a fence for the Miracle League’s new state-of-the art field at Sokol Park. The special field allows children with disabilities to enjoy playing baseball.

The chili cookoff has twenty-seven sponsors, including ten major sponsors. Smith says that without the sponsors’ generous support, the cookoff and the contingent benefits for the community would not be possible.

Following the chili cookoff, Bama fans can attend the men’s basketball team’s game against Ole Miss, which conveniently has a 3 p.m. starting time.

Admission to the cookoff is $8 in advance and $10 at the door. Advance tickets may be purchased at Fitts Agency, 1806 Sixth Street, or from an Exchange Club member.   Dr. Beito is the author of Taxpayers in Revolt: Tax Resistance during the Great Depression (1989); From Mutual Aid to the Welfare State: Fraternal Societies and Social Services, 1890-1967 (2000); The Voluntary City: Choice, Community, and Civil Society (2002); and Black Maverick: T.R.M. Howard's Fight for Civil Rights and Economic Power (2009) which was co-authored by Professor Linda Royster Beito of Stillman College). Black Maverick is a biography of civil rights leader, surgeon, entrepreneur and self-help advocate,T.R.M. Howard, who was a mentor to Medgar Evards and Fannie Lou Hamer, and was reviewed by the Wall Street Journal, Harper's Bazzar magazine, and other publications.
   Beito is the founder and one of the key contributors to the group weblog Liberty and Power, which is located at the History News Network.
   He writes frequently on current controversies related to academic freedom and academic standards including the speech code issue, the Academic Bill of Rights, grade inflation, and the murder of Emmit Till. He is a former president of the Alabama Scholars Association. In February 2007, Beito was appointed to chair the Alabama State Advisory Committee of the United States Commission on Civil Rights.
   Dr. Beito was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He received a B.A. in history from the University of Minnesota in 1980 and a Ph.D in history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1986. Since 1994, he has taught at the University of Alabama, where he is a professor in history.

The Alabama Symphony Orchestra will perform “Dream, Child. Hope,” an original composition by Aldophus Hailstork, as the featured work of the 2011 Martin Luther King Jr. Realizing the Dream Concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, in the Moody Music Building Concert Hall at The University of Alabama. “Dream, Child. Hope” will be performed by the orchestra as well as an ensemble of 70 singers drawn from three area groups. -- The Tuscaloosa County Park & Recreation Authority announced winners of the West Alabama Christmas Parade judged entries at a post parade meeting in the conference room of the PARA Building on December 6.

Chris Gunter-Buffalo Rock Pepsi, Donny Jones – West Alabama Chamber of Commerce, Carla Bailey, Children’s Hands On Museum and Cindy Merrill, principal of Westwood Elementary School served as parade judges. There were 131 entries in this year’s parade. Joseph Rose, human resources director announced the winners and presented trophies in four categories.

Winners who were not present at the meeting may pick up their trophies at the PARA Building located at 614 Greensboro Avenue in Tuscaloosa.

PARA KICKS OFF THE HOLIDAY SEASON WITH THE AREA’S LARGEST CHRISTMAS PARADE ON MONDAY, DECEMBER 6

The Tuscaloosa County Park & Recreation Authority will present the 35th annual West Alabama Christmas Parade and Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on December 6 in downtown Tuscaloosa. Both events are free and open to the pubic.

Bundle up with your coat, hat, scarf and mittens for the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on the steps of the Tuscaloosa County Courthouse which begins at 5:15 p.m. The parade route follows on Greensboro Avenue and University Blvd. beginning at 6:30 p.m. and is approximately 0.8 miles in length. Any location along the parade route provides an excellent viewing location.

The parade route begins on Greensboro Avenue at 14th Street, travels north to University Blvd. turns east and ends at the corner of University Blvd. and 19th Avenue.

The parade, recognized as West Alabama’s largest, includes over 130 floats, decorated vehicles, bands, marching groups along with costumed characters and horse groups.

Parking is available in the city’s Intermodal Facility/Parking Deck located at the corner of 7th Street and 22 Avenue, in the parking lot on the corner of Greensboro Avenue and University Blvd. and along the parade route. The Intermodal Facility is a central location to meet your group before and after the parade.

A “Lost and Found” station for children and other items is located in the PARA Building close to the corner of Greensboro Avenue and 6th Street.

Portable toilets will be located in two points along the parade route. The first location is in the Jemison House parking lot on Greensboro Avenue. The second location is in the city parking lot at the corner of Greensboro Avenue and University Blvd., which will also feature a handicapped accessible toilet.

Dan Medders, Maintenance Supervisor at the Tuscaloosa County Courthouse confirmed that the Courthouse Christmas tree was donated by Madelyn Romain of the Hulls community. It is an approximately 35 foot tall Leland Cypress and will be decorated with 1,040 lights and ornaments.

The Tree Lighting celebration will begin with music by the Choristers from Tuscaloosa Academy directed by Emily VonRedlich. Bobby Wooldridge, retired Tuscaloosa County Public Defender, will be Master of Ceremonies. This year’s Grand Marshals, Theophilus Danzy and Alvin P. DuPont will “flip the switch” to light the tree. The celebration will continue with music by students from Walker Elementary, Northside Middle and Northside High School Choruses directed by Sarah Graham and Westwood Elementary Chorus directed by Aldis McDonald.

Midtown Village Offers a North Pole Express Mailbox

The merchants of Midtown Village invite children to mail letters to Santa during the holidays, using a special North Pole Express mailbox. The U.S. Postal Service will pick up the mail on a regular basis with delivery to “The North Pole.”

A freestanding mailbox will be available through December 24 next to the stairs outside building 300 between Kinnucan’s and Kobe Steakhouse and Sushi Bar. Directional signs will be located on the Midtown Village property to assist in locating the North Pole Express mailbox. There is a small Nutcracker display close by the mailbox for the children to enjoy while mailing their letters.

The Old Tavern, the Battle Friedman House and Gardens and the Jemison-Van de Graaff Mansion will all be open on Sunday, December 5 from 2 to 4pm.

The Old Tavern which is one of the last 19^th century inns in the state of Alabama may have hosted travelers as they passed through Tuscaloosa on their way home for the holidays. The Jemison-Van de Graaff Mansion, so stately and so ahead of it’s time technologically that it was the first house in Tuscaloosa to have a fully plumbed bathroom will greet visitors in Holiday colors and decorations.

The Battle-Friedman House and Gardens, which offers a natural welcome as guests pass though the home’s spacious garden will offer entertainment by The Rock Quarry Middle School’s Strings in Schools and Sipsey Valley Middle School Choir during the afternoon.

TAZIKI’S MEDITERRANEAN CAFÉ SIGNS LEASE FOR TUSCALOOSA LOCATION

TUSCALOOSA (November 22, 2010) – Midtown Village today announced it has signed a lease with Taziki’s Mediterranean Café, a casual dining restaurant inspired by the fresh flavors of Greece. Taziki’s Mediterranean Café will have 3,236 square feet in suite 300 in close proximity to Kobe Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi Bar and is expected to open during the first quarter of 2011. Construction is expected to begin in the next 30 days.

“We are proud to have Taziki’s Mediterranean Café come on board and join our array of restaurant offerings at Midtown Village,” said Stephen Schmidt, vice president of the development. “They are an established restaurant operator that will bring a new type of food to the center and to the Tuscaloosa area.”

The Tuscaloosa location will be the eighth Taziki’s Mediterranean Café in the state of Alabama, with six of the others located nearby in Birmingham. Menus vary by location, but diners can expect an assortment of Greek staples like hummus, Mediterranean salads, gyros, deli sandwiches, grilled meats and fish and healthy sides like basmati rice, pasta salad and fresh cut fruit. Beer and wine is available for those 21 years of age and older, while a kids’ menu boasts childhood favorites like grilled cheese and peanut butter and jelly.

“Our restaurant concept will fill the void of fresh Mediterranean fare at Midtown Village and matches that of what the center has to offer the public, as far as signature shops and restaurants,” said Keith Richards, president of Taziki’s Mediterranean Café. “I believe we will open strong with such closeness to our Birmingham stores and friends and family that live nearby.”

PARA ANNOUNCES GRAND MARSHALS OF 2010 CHRISTMAS PARADE

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The Tuscaloosa County Park & Recreation Authority announced the Grand Marshals of the 2010 West Alabama Christmas Parade during a press conference held on November 16, 10 a.m. in the downtown PARA Building.

The 2010 Grand Marshals are Theophilus Danzy, former Stillman College head football coach and Alvin P. DuPont, former mayor. Both men are long time residents of Tuscaloosa County.

A selection committee comprised of representatives from various community organizations chose the two honorees from all the individuals nominated.

Excerpts from their nomination narratives are as follows:

Coach Theophilus Danzy says his reason for coaching football is, “To help boys get out of cracks and crevices they have fallen in and would not be able to get out of by themselves.” He believes that the game of football in general and coaches specifically teach life lessons that are hard to acquire in other ways. “Discipline, accountability, hard work, toughness, and teamwork are life lessons which are instilled in young men who participate in a good football program,” he says.

Coach Danzy was hired by Stillman College as head football coach in 1998, to resurrect its football program, a program that had been idled for fifty years. He worked with the National Football League to secure uniforms and equipment to begin the program from scratch. The Atlanta Falcons were the most generous team, sending most of the equipment to rebuild the program. Danzy worked local and out of state connections at high schools and junior colleges to recruit student players to come to Stillman. On the opening day of practice, 317 students showed up for tryouts. The college’s enrollment numbers increased, in part due to the exposure of the football program. In his two years as head football coach at Stillman, Danzy led the Tigers to a 10-8 record, improving his career coaching record to 53-60-3.

Coach Danzy was also active with the Bethel Program based at Bethel Baptist Church. This program offered high school dropouts and expelled students the necessary tutoring to continue their education so they could earn a GED.

A graduate of Druid High School in Tuscaloosa, Danzy obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation at Tennessee A&I University in Nashville. He pursued further study at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, and Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

While continuing his education, Danzy established a history of revitalizing and building athletic programs throughout the South. Among his varied background of teaching and coaching experiences are such schools as: Athletic Director/Head Football Coach/Instructor of Health & Physical Education, Alcorn State University, Lorman, Mississippi, 1986-1990; Assistant Head Football Coach/Instructor of Health & Physical Education at Alcorn, 1982-1986; Athletic Director/Head Football Coach/Professor of Health & Physical Education, Miles College, Birmingham, Alabama, 1980-1982; Assistant Coach & Defensive Coordinator at University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, 1979-1980; Head Football Coach at Alabama A&M University at Normal, 1977-1979; Assistant Football Coach/Defensive Coordinator/Assistant Professor of Health & Education, Head Golf Coach, Alcorn State University, Lorman, Mississippi, 1974-1977; Athletic Director/Football Coach at Prairie View A&M University in Texas, 1972-1974; Assistant Football Coach/Assistant Professor of Health & Physical Education at Alcorn A&M College, Lorman, Mississippi, 1964-1972.

Danzy has held membership in the American Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation Teachers, American Football Coaches Association, and the American Association of University Professors.

Danzy has five children, five grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

Former Mayor Alvin P. DuPont was also selected to serve as 2010 Grand Marshal. His nomination narrative comments included the following: As Mayor of the City of Tuscaloosa, Mayor DuPont established a sense of trust with the community of Tuscaloosa. His open door policy provided citizens the opportunity to voice their concerns.

The City of Tuscaloosa completed projects of over $73.5 million dollars during his administration. Tuscaloosa expanded the Police Department, obtained additional fire equipment, improved the E-911 service capabilities, and improved our library.

Mayor DuPont was instrumental in the location of MBUSI to Tuscaloosa and the accompanying Visitor’s Center, a growing tourist attraction. Tuscaloosa was afforded several recreational opportunities including revitalizing the Downtown Riverfront Development and the redevelopment of the original downtown district which today serves as home to numerous restaurants and entertainments businesses. He played a key role in the expansion of the north end zone of Bryant Denny Stadium on the UA campus.

He was also instrumental in the development of Lake Nichol and Lake Tuscaloosa and helped develop the first sanitary sewer treatment. While serving as Mayor, he actively assisted in the recruitment of industrial development, establishing growth of the Industrial development park and creating new opportunities through the opening of Mercedes in Tuscaloosa. New employment opportunities offered in Tuscaloosa between 1982 and 2005 increased significantly due to industrial development.

He is recognized as the only Alabama Mayor to serve two terms as Alabama League of Municipalities. He was recognized in 2009 as a Community Foundation of West Alabama 2009 Pillar of the Community.

Today, former Mayor DuPont can be found volunteering in the community. On Tuesdays he volunteers with the VA Hospital, on Thursdays he volunteers at DCH Regional Medical Center and on Saturdays he can be found at the Children’s Hands On Museum.

The 35^th Annual West Alabama Christmas Parade is the largest of its kind in the West Alabama area and is typically held on the first Monday in December. After more than three decades in Birmingham, the Miss Alabama USA and Miss Alabama Teen USA pageants are moving to Tuscaloosa. The 2011 pageants will be Nov. 6-7 at the Bama Theatre on Greensboro Avenue. “I knew it would be something special here,” said Dohn Dye, executive director of the pageants. “Tuscaloosa is the city of champions, and I knew that it would embrace the pageant and the young ladies who would be coming here.” Dye announced the move from Birmingham to Tuscaloosa in May, shortly after taking over as executive director of the pageants, which are part of the Miss Universe organization and under a partnership between NBC Universal and Donald Trump. Dye said a total of 95 contestants- 55 for the Miss Alabama pageant and 40 for the Miss Alabama Teen contest- between the ages of 14 and 26 have registered. The women will compete in interview, swimsuit and evening gown competitions for the chance to win thousands of dollars in scholarships and prizes. The winner of each will go on to represent Alabama in the respective national pageants while traveling the state promoting the pageants’ charitable affiliations.

“This is going to be a full-scale production,” said Dye, who also hosts a weekly segment on fashion, celebrity gossip, style and social events on CBS 42’s Wake Up Alabama! “It’s going to be a little New York and Las Vegas in Tuscaloosa.” The dignitaries will include Alabama’s only Miss USA and Miss Universe winner, Sylvia Louise Hitchcock, who was a student at the University of Alabama when she won the crowns in 1967 and will return to the pageant for the first time, Dye said. Two seven-member panels of judges are being flown in from such areas as New York City, Los Angeles, Dallas and Salt Lake City, and Dye turned to his former classmate at UA, national award-winning choreographer Christopher Dean, to assist with the pageants. “It’s going to be a great show and great production,” Dye said. It’s also going to be a great economic influx for the city of Tuscaloosa. Beakie Powell, the director of meetings and conventions for Visit Tuscaloosa, formerly the Tuscaloosa Convention and Visitors Bureau, said she worked closely with Dye for two years to bring the pageants to Tuscaloosa. Here are just two of the nearly 200 photos taken of the delegation from Sunyani Ghana West Africa. The delegation consists of three mayors, a governor and headmaster of the secondary school system. They toured the University of Alabama, Stillman College, and West Tuscaloosa including the McKenzie Courts Housing Development. They sat in on a Tuscaloosa City Council Meeting and later met with officials to learn of how their government is run. They have dined at Maggie's Dinner, McDonald's, Brown's Corner, Brown's Memorial Presbyterian Church. They will tour Mercedes later today and have a little time to do some shopping. They depart Tuscaloosa on Saturday. Tuscaloosa is hoping this visit will bring about Sunyani becoming our third Sister City. Lisa Keyes, Sister Cities Commission Director and the BOD have worked very hard this past year to bring this delegation to Tuscaloosa to highlight and inform them of what we have to offer.

“Boot Camp for Breast Cancer” will be a 1-hour fitness workout led by Mallory Cargile, owner and instructor of Tuscaloosa Adventure Boot Camp for Women. The event will be held outside in front of Peterbrooke Chocolatier in Tuscaloosa, who is also the event co-sponsor. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Cargile said her hope is that people will want to come out with an enthusiastic attitude, have fun, and get a great workout – all while supporting a cause close to her heart. “My mom is a breast cancer survivor, and all of us know too many people who have been diagnosed with this disease. Teaching the benefits of exercise and inspiring others to get healthy is my passion, and if I can do that and raise money for this disease at the same time, it will be a great day!”

Cargile said exercise can also provide major benefits for breast cancer survivors. “It can help you regain strength and flexibility, have less fatigue, and sleep better. And most importantly, it can help you in regaining control over your body and your quality of life.”

Peterbrooke Chocolatier will be hosting the event as well as providing chocolate-covered strawberries with pink breast cancer ribbons for all participants after the workout. USA Triathlon's signature events - the 2010 Age Group, Elite and Sprint National Championships - will once again be held in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Sept. 25-26. This year's two-day event marks the fourth consecutive year that a major triathlon championship has been held in the city.

Successful USAT Collegiate National Championships in 2007 and 2008, the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials and last year's Age Group and Elite National Championships have helped to develop a strong bond between the city, the Tuscaloosa Convention and Visitor's Bureau, the University of Alabama and USA Triathlon.

Over 1,500 athletes already have signed on compete at this year's Age Group and Sprint National Championships to battle for national titles in 28 age groups. The Olympic-distance age group event will be contested on Saturday, Sept. 25 on a 1.5-kilometer swim, 40-kilometer bike and 10-kilometer run course, while the Sunday, Sept. 26 sprint event is comprised of a 750m swim, a 20k bike and a 5k run.

Additionally, the United States' top professional triathletes will vie for elite national crowns on a draft-legal course that covers the same distance as the amateurs (1.5k-40k-10k). Elite athletes ages 18-23 also will be in contention for U23 national titles, and the event is an ITU Continental Cup race.

All events will take place at Manderson Landing, which is located at Jack Warner Parkway and Hackberry Lane on the University of Alabama campus.

Currently, tourism information is being provided in local hotels with custom video segments and highlights of Tuscaloosa area attractions and the community in general.

The new updated features include the ability to crawl text messages in real time from the Tuscaloosa Department of Transportation, Tuscaloosa CVB or from the individual hotel.

Using RSS technology (Real Simple Syndication) TDOT can provide information on traffic conditions, road closures on a daily basis.

The local hotelier can access the system to provide guest with information via a secure user name and password.

The Tuscaloosa CVB can also access the system to send messages to individual hotels or system wide to give visitors specific information during special events.

The system is a joint project of the Tuscaloosa Convention and Visitors Bureau, Tuscaloosa Department of Transportation and local hotels.

Tailgating in the South has become an art form. It is the self-expression of generations of alumni who live for football season. The success of tailgating is food, plus friends, with a little football thrown in.
Because of Alabama's heat during the first half of football season, plan foods that are great at room temperature. Use your imagination for great tablescapes and flowers, and try one of these recipes we will present over the next couple of weeks.

SLOW-COOKER PULLED PORK BARBEQUE

Ingredients

   * 2 Tablespoon Chili Powder
   * 1 Tablespoon Onion Powder
   * 1.5 Teaspoon Garlic Powder
   * 2 Teaspoon Kosher Salt
   * 1 Teaspoon Black Pepper
   * a Pinch of Cayenne Pepper
   * 5 Lbs Boneless Pork Butt of Shoulder
   * 2 Cup Barbecue, homemade or favorite store brand
   * 10-12 Soft Hamburger-style Buns

Directions

   * In a small bowl, mix the chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, pepper and cayenne. Rub the spice mixture on all sides of the pork. Cover and refrigerate for at least two hours and up to overnight.
   * Place pork in a slow cooker. Set on low heat and cook for 10 hours. Transfer from the slow cooker to a roasting pan and shred with two forks, removing any large pieces of fat. Pour the broth into a heatproof pitcher or large fat separator, and skim off the fat. Put the pork back into the slow cooker. Combine the barbecue sauce and 3 cups of the skimmed broth. Stir into the pork and cook two hours. Using a slotted spoon, remove the pork from the slow cooker. Place the meat on a serving platter or on individual buns. Serve the remaining sauce alongside.

Tuscaloosa County's Junior Miss, an official local preliminary of the America's Junior Miss scholarship program. Our program awards college scholarships to young women who have distinguished themselves at school and in their communities. It is our goal to provide the Junior Miss experience to every eligible young woman in our region. Those who participate in Junior Miss programs develop interview skills, self-confidence, and other life skills that lead to future success.

The competition for scholarships begins here, at the local level, in towns and cities like yours. Contestants from throughout our region come to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to appear before five judges. Winners advance to state competition, at Alabama's Junior Miss. Our state winner then competes in our national competition, America's Junior Miss, in Mobile, Alabama.

Junior Misses from all 50 states will travel to the historic port city of Mobile, Alabama, for the 54th Annual America's Junior Miss National Finals, June 25-27, 2011. Ruthie Foster, who hails from Texas, is a dynamic singer/songwriter/performer with a unique mix of folk, soul, blues, gospel and R&B. Foster has a sound that ignores demographic lines and a charisma that can ignite any audience. Even as a young girl, she took in a variety of music: hymns from her mother, Beatles songs from her guitar teacher, 45s from her truck-driving uncle, old-school country from various country variety shows, and pop songs.

She studied music in Waco at McClennan Community College, and after a while she was fronting a blues band in biker bars and other venues from Dallas to San Antonio. Eventually, Foster joined the Navy, where she was signed up by Pride, a Navy ensemble that played the Top 40 and funk hits of the day at recruitment drives, mainly throughout the Southeastern states.

From there, Foster’s went to New York, where she absorbed more influences by performing at folk venues and collaborating with some of the city’s better songwriters. Supported by a contract with Atlantic Records, she expanded her lyrical and musical range. However, her writing began veering away from commercial pop and drawing instead from the roots that had nourished her personally and artistically in her youth. The next Art Night at Kentuck offers pleasures for all the senses. Two new exhibitions, pizza and gelato, live music, and a Raku firing combine to make Thursday, August 5, one to mark in your calendar.

Kentuck Gallery presents highlights from the loaned collection Inspiration/Transformation: 14 Photographers Respond to Ma’Cille’s Museum of Miscellanea. The opening reception will take place on Art Night, August 5, 2010 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The exhibit will be on display until August 28, 2010.

An exhibition of ceramics by Joe McComb opens in the Kentuck Annex Gallery on Art Night as well. The Kentuck Museum Permanent Collection Gallery will also be open for viewing.

The Kentuck Gallery Shop is showcasing wearable art. Selected items from Kentuck’s jewelry collection will be discounted from 40 to 60 percent off original prices.

Afterward, his motorcade pulled into the parking lot of the Northport McDonald's at the Northwood Shopping Center. It was a photo op, meant to show that the President was a regular guy. Secret Service agents grabbed two customers and sat them down next to Reagan to talk about University of Alabama football. Regular-guy Reagan turned to an aide and asked, "What am I supposed to order?" He apparently had never been in a McDonald's before.
That gaffe didn't prevent the voters from re-electing Ronnie in a landslide, and it wasn't remembered at the Northport McDonald's. But for years, Reagan's visit was. The owner displayed memorabilia from that day in the store: the $20 bill that was used to pay for the food that Reagan was told to order (a Big Mac, large fries, and a sweet tea), photos recording the event, and a plaque under glass at the table where Reagan sat, etched with the words "President Reagan ate here." But the plaque kept getting stolen, and when a new owner took over in 1995 the memorabilia disappeared. Clinton was President; Reagan was history.

A decade later, Reagan is back in style. On January 11, 2006, the old store was bulldozed and on May 8 a new $1.5 million "dressed up" McDonald's opened on the spot. The owner, Rick Hanna Sr., who for 11 years had ignored the store's most famous diner, has caught the shift in the political wind. Now Hanna hasn't just remembered Reagan -- he's enshrined him. The new store features a bronze bust of the ex-President, inside a case, with a halogen light shining on it 24 hours a day. Atop the case are the words "President Reagan ate here."

The dimwitted sweet-hearted Alabamian from Greenbow was a football star at UA before embarking on the rest of his adventurous life. The 1994 film adaptation captured the Best Picture Oscar.

The Arts and Humanities Council of Tuscaloosa County will present an exhibit of works by local artist Tony Brock, titled “Gassers, Ghouls and Gals,” in the Bama Theatre’s Junior League Gallery. The exhibit will open with a reception on Thursday, August 5, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. during the Artrageous Tour and will run through the 26th. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., and during Bama Theatre events. Admission is free.

In the 42 years of Tony Brock’s life, numerous factors influenced, or to quote the artist, “warped” his creativity. The hot rod/monster art of Big Daddy Roth, Roach Studio t-shirt designs, Saturday morning cartoons, comic books, movies, Disco and cheesy synthesizer music from the 1980s are but a few of those influences. He has been drawing since he could walk, illustrating dune buggies and choppers on grocery sacks, filling up reams of notebook paper with super-hero drawings and drawing cholo tattoos on classmates’ arms for a quarter during recess.

Brock’s parents were always traveling from town to town and state to state, and as a result, he never lived in one location more than three months. Drawing became an escape from the tedium of the long road trips, and since he was always the “new kid in school,” his skill quickened the transition from the “new kid” to “hey, that new kid can draw Spider-Man!”

Brock eventually settled in Tuscaloosa, where he finished high school, attended Shelton State Community College, got married and became a parent. His technique improved, and as a result of his passion for art, he then pursued a career in the field of graphic design. He was employed as an artist at The Tuscaloosa News and, for the last ten years, has been putting his experience to work at Randall-Reilly Publishing, managing a staff of art directors and designing numerous business-to-business trade magazines for print and web.

Brock has shifted his emphasis from drawing to painting in what little free time he has left, just for the pure joy and sometimes frustration of the process. He paints on canvas, plywood, masonite, light switches, cats and whatever else will hold paint. Acrylic is his medium of choice when he revisits the influences that were inspirational in the first place. In each of his paintings, one can see the pieces of popular culture from the 1970s and 80s: a little Roth here, a Kirby perspective there, topped with a dash of Blondie’s “Heart of Glass.”

Tony Brock still feels like the “new kid” who is always being creative, and that is okay with him.

At the head of the Tuscaloosa Basin in the Appalachian foothills, the "Black Warrior Village" existed just west of downtown Tuscaloosa. This was the beginning of the history of Tuscaloosa. NATIVE AMERICAN HISTORYThe "Black Warrior Village" has been in existence as early as 1580, although it was abandoned at times. The village was unoccupied circa 1750-1760. The primary native tribes of the area were the Choctaw and Creeks. The Creeks resettled the old village around 1800. By order of General Andrew Jackson, General Coffee and his men attacked the Creek village in 1813 during the Creek War. The village was burned as retaliation to the kidnapping of Mrs. Crowley at Duck River, Tennessee, leaving few Creeks in the area. After the Creek War any remaining creeks were removed to land in eastern Alabama west of the Coosa River. The Choctaw Indians removed to lands west of Tuscaloosa, although some remained in the area. By 1836, President Andrew Jackson had decided that all Indians must be moved to the Indian Territory, a move that we all know as the "trail of Tears."
EARLY SETTLERS IN TUSCALOOSA
The first permanent white settler of the Black Warrior Village was Thomas York, and family, who came to the area in early 1816. By late 1816 several families were in the area. The county seat was established in the town of Tuscaloosa, which was incorporated 13 December 1819 from the "Black Warrior Village". Tuscaloosa was "laid out" by Colin Finnell in early 1821 for the government.

Lots were sold at auction in November 1821. The initial delay in laying out Tuscaloosa by the government caused another town to be established, known as New Town. The county seat was moved to nearby New Town in 1822. New Town had been established just west of the city of Tuscaloosa on 20 December 1820. New Town arose from a land grant given to William Ely, who was appointed agent to sell the land for the benefit of an asylum in Connecticut.

In 1821 Ely sold the land to a group of men who set aside a part of the land that set south of the Black Warrior River as a "new town." The town was laid out by Colin Finnel as well. Soon after, the county seat moved back to Tuscaloosa. When Tuscaloosa became the state capitol in 1826, New Town became part of Tuscaloosa. In the 1840's a tornado destroyed many of the original structures.
THE CAPITOL AT TUSCALOOSAA growing Tuscaloosa was chosen in 1852 as a replacement to the state capitol at Cahaba. The new state capitol building was designed by W.M. Nichols in 1826. All materials for the building were local. The first session of the legislature was held there in 1829. Tuscaloosa became a busy river port, as the town was situated at the highest point river traffic could navigate to from mobile.

Tuscaloosa served as the home for the state government from 1826 until 1846. As the eastern section of the state grew, legislators decided to move the capitol to the middle of the state at Montgomery. The loss of the capitol caused Tuscaloosa to lose over half of its population after 1846.
THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMAIn 1827 the state university was established at Tuscaloosa. On April 18, 1831, the University of Alabama began operations and enrolled 52 students. In 1860 the University of Alabama became a military university. In 1865, Union troops known as Croxton's Raiders burned all but four of the University's buildings.

Tuscaloosa, Alabama is an area very much alive with history, character and beauty. The city, which was named an All-America City by the National Civic League in 2002, is home to Mercedes-Benz U.S. International, which allows Tuscaloosa to have the only Mercedes-Benz Museum on the world outside of Germany. The cities neighborhoods offer diversity - from elegant estates to contemporary homes. You'll find quaint communities in the historic district. College town, small town and big city - it's all right here.

Hey, if you are in Alabama, tune in to Fox 6, or one of the other Fox affiliates around the state at 6:00 p.m. today to see Fred Hunter's "Absolutely Alabama" segment on the museum at Moundville! In some markets the segment will also run on Saturday and Sunday.

Second, remember that we have a special program called "Saturday in the Park" every Saturday through the Summer and Fall. This Saturday's program from 10:00-2:00 is "From Bows to Baskets." Learn the art of bow making and basketry from husband and wife team, Sterling Holbrook and Krista Hansen. Sterling discusses the technology behind making a long bow and arrows, Southeastern Indian style while Krista demonstrates rivercane basket making from start to finish.

Julie Love-Templeton from "She's Got the Look" is one of the contestants in Season 3 of the TV Land model competition series. Julie ("She's Got the Look 3") is 36 years old. Julie Love-Templeton is from Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

A true Southern Belle and former "Mrs. American," Julie ("She's Got the Look 3") is the youngest of 10 children. Wanting to impress her father, Julie Love-Templeton followed in her parents' footsteps and became a trial lawyer. When her father passed away, Julie ("She's Got the Look 3") realized that she enjoyed being a lawyer only because it brought her closer to him. Even though Julie Love-Templeton describes herself as a "bull in a china shop," she's always had the modeling bug.

FREE DAY AT BRYANT MUSEUM MONDAY, JULY 5th.

The Museum will be FREE all day Monday July 5th to thank our visitors for their loyalty and support.
This summer a construction fence will be placed around the south lawn (Bryant Drive side) as the area will be re-landscaped with new sidewalks and lighting installed. The centerpiece of the new Bryant Museum Plaza features a brick paver patio with the script “A” logo. Note the museum will remain open operating on our regular schedule of 9am-4pm daily during construction. Parking is available on the north side between the museum and the Moody Music Building. The project will be completed in time for the first game vs. San Jose State.

Kentuck Gallery presents a group show of artists from the Crossroads Arts Alliance of Gordo, Alabama. The opening reception will take place on Art Night, July 1, 2010 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The CAA consists of Rhys Greene, Suzanne Gray, Glenn House, Sr., Butch House, Melba Hollingsworth, Jessica Peterson, Barbara Lee Black, Amos Paul Kennedy, Jr., Barbara Pennington, and Kathleen Fetters. The exhibit will be on display until July 31, 2010.

In addition to the opening reception, there will be music by Ian Bittner in the Kentuck Courtyard. Art Night participants will enjoy fresh made bread and pizzas from the cob oven. Kentuck encourages participants to bring an item(s) to donate to the newest Kentuck mosaic.

Also beginning at 5 p.m. on July 1, the Kentuck Annex Gallery presents an exhibition of traditional hand-made quilts by Mrs. Beatrice Moore. Mrs. Moore, who is 106 years old, has been quilting since 1917. She will be honored with a reception in the Annex on Saturday, July 17, from noon until 2 p.m., in conjunction with Kentuck’s July a la cARTe.

PARA HOSTS JULY JUBILEE THE AREAS LARGEST INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION

Tuscaloosa, Ala. – The Tuscaloosa County Park and Recreation Authority will host July Jubilee, the largest Independence Day celebration in West Alabama, on July 4 from 6 – 9 p.m. at Sokol Park. The main entrance is located across from 401 Old Colony Road, Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The event is free and open to the public.

Because large crowds are expected, parking maps for the event have been included on posters. PARA staff recommends the following parking guidelines:

1. Main Entrance for all activities and fireworks is located off of Old Colony Road.

2. Handicapped and Emergency Vehicle Entrance is off of Watermelon road by the Jenkins Multi-Purpose Arena. This entrance is closed to the public.

3. Sokol Park North – an additional parking area for fireworks viewing is also located off

of Watermelon Road.

Directional signs will be posted in the park with additional event information. The set-up will be similar to last year’s with the children’s activities stationed near the Multi-Purpose Arena in the center of the park.

Live music is set to begin at 6 p.m. with three acts taking the stage. A new addition to the music line-up this year is two youth bands; Eat My Beats and the Alabama Blues Project will perform before headliner Southern Distortion takes the stage at 7 p.m. Southern Distortion is an alternative/rock original band which is best known for their songs "I Will Wait For You" and "I Can’t Have You Here."

PARA is thankful to the sponsors who make it possible to offer this event free to the public. This year’s major sponsors are Nucor Steel Tuscaloosa, Inc., Buffalo Rock Pepsi, Walter Energy, Clear Channel Radio, WVUA-TV, The Tuscaloosa News, Weatherford Printing Company and Bank of Tuscaloosa.

Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a myriad of family activities as well as live music and the fireworks show. Children’s activities begin at 6 p.m. and include old-fashioned games and activities such as: the water balloon toss, sack races, ice cream eating contests, face painting and inflatable bounce houses to jump on. The popular rock climbing wall will return.

Those attending are encouraged to bring blankets and folding chairs to sit and listen to the live music and watch the fireworks, which will be visible from any location inside the park’s 325 acres. Because Sokol Park is located on high point in Tuscaloosa County, fireworks will also be visible for several miles around the park.

The grand finale fireworks show begins at 9 p.m. with a 25 minute display set to patriotic music provided by Clear Channel Radio.

All PARA activity/community centers will be closed on July 4. This includes the Belk, Hughes, McAbee, Miller and Phelps Centers. On July 5, the Centers will be open but the offices are closed in observance of the holiday.
